Physician-owned eye care and aesthetics, serving San Antonio, Central, and South Texas since 2010
San Antonio Eye & Face Institute is an independent, physician-owned practice offering medical and surgical eye care, along with minimally invasive aesthetic treatments such as Botox and fillers. We opened in January 2010 as San Antonio Eye Institute on Huebner Road, and in February 2020 we moved to a larger space on Lockhill-Selma Road to serve more patients.
Dr. Relief Jones, III and Dr. Maria Isabel Triana are a husband-and-wife team with 45+ combined years of clinical ophthalmology experience. Our staff members have worked in ophthalmology, optometry, dermatology, and school-based health care, and they’re ready to help you take control of your eye health and your aesthetic goals.
Our Story:
Why Physician-Owned Matters
Dr. Jones worked for a large, managed-care dominated practice for a few years before starting the San Antonio Eye & Face Institute. He wanted to work in a practice where patients felt their problems were being solved and their questions were being answered.
San Antonio Eye & Face Institute is owned and run by the two doctors who treat you. In practice, that means:
- You’re cared for directly by Dr. Jones or Dr. Triana. Dr. Jones performs all of our surgeries, and you’ll meet him before any procedure.
- Visits aren’t rushed.
- Decisions about your care are made by your physicians, not by a corporate parent.
The Doctors
Both of our doctors are board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Jones completed a clinical fellowship in glaucoma, and Dr. Triana completed a research fellowship in glaucoma genetics, both at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School’s ophthalmology program (Ranked #4 by U.S. News & World Report 2026-27).
Relief Jones, III, M.D. - Cataract & Glaucoma Surgeon
Dr. Jones graduated with honors from Stanford University and then from Duke University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Tulane University and a residency in ophthalmology at UT Health San Antonio. He then completed fellowships at Harvard Medical School in glaucoma (clinical) and in immunology and transplantation (research).
Maria Isabel Triana, M.D. - Comprehensive Ophthalmologist
Dr. Triana completed her pre-medical and medical studies, internship, and ophthalmology residency at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, and practiced there before moving to the United States. To practice in the U.S., she completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in ophthalmology at UT Health San Antonio. She also completed a research fellowship in glaucoma genetics at Harvard Medical School.
Our Team
Our staff includes ophthalmic technicians, a billing and surgery coordinator, and front desk staff, many with experience in other ophthalmology and optometry clinics, dermatology offices, and school-based health care.
Priscilla C. - Ophthalmic Technician
Priscilla is originally from Boerne, Texas, and graduated from Boerne High School. She completed the cosmetology program at Nuvani Institute and has been licensed since 2018. Before moving into ophthalmology, she worked in dermatology, endocrinology, and family counseling. In her free time she enjoys working out, fishing, crafting, and travel, and she was a high school basketball player.
Hannah S. - Billing & Surgical Coordinator
Hannah is originally from Bryan-College Station, Texas. She has an associates degree from San Antonio College in Early Education and also completed the Limited Medical Radiologic Technician (LMRT) program at the College for Healthcare Professions. She coordinates billing and scheduling for cataract and glaucoma surgeries. She has worked in management roles in various industries, including the restaurant industry. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, outdoor activities, and spending time with family.
Amber L. - Ophthalmic Technician
Amber is originally from Bryan-College Station, Texas and graduated from Caney Creek High School. She has worked in eye clinics since 2008 starting as a receptionist, but eventually training to become a technician. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family, hiking, baking, and watching movies.
Melanie B. - Front Desk
Melanie is originally from San Antonio, Texas, and is the first person you'll meet when you arrive. She is a graduate of Harlandale High School and Sul Ross State University. In her free time she enjoys spending time with family and watching the latest blockbuster release on the big screen.
We’ve invested in diagnostic technology that lets us see and test the eye in more detail than ever, which helps us catch and track conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease earlier.
- 3D OCT (optical coherence tomography). Creates detailed cross-section images of the retina and optic nerve, so we can detect and track changes over time. Topcon Maestro 3D OCT imaging is painless, takes a few minutes, and doesn’t require dilation.
- Virtual reality visual field testing. Measures your side (peripheral) vision using a headset, which helps us monitor glaucoma and other conditions. Micro Medical Devices’ device is more comfortabel than older, bowl-style machines.
- Ambulatory Surgery Center Techology. LENSAR Ally laser, ORA system – advanced technologies for cataract surgery

What to Expect During an Eye Exam
- Check-in. Bring your photo ID, insurance card(s), and a list of your current medications and any eye drops.
- Pre-testing. Our technicians review your history and check your vision, eye pressure, and any imaging your doctor orders.
- Dilation. Drops widen your pupils so the doctor can see the back of your eye. Vision is typically blurry and light-sensitive for several hours, so bring sunglasses and consider having someone drive you.
- Exam with your doctor. Dr. Jones or Dr. Triana examines your eyes, explains the findings, and answers your questions.
- Plan. We’ll discuss treatment options, medications, or follow-up, and schedule any procedures.

Are you accepting new patients? Yes. Both Dr. Triana and Dr. Jones are accepting new patients.
Do you speak Spanish? Yes, “se habla español.” Dr. Triana, Priscilla (Ophthalmic Technician), and Melanie (Front Desk) speak fluent Spanish. Dr. Jones is a proficient Spanish speaker.
