Macular Degeneration

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is when the macula which is responsible for your direct line of sight, starts to deteriorate. Macular degeneration does not cause complete blindness, but it can cause a significant vision loss. Also, damage caused by macular degeneration is not reversible, but treatment can slow the progression of the disease. Anyone can develop macular degeneration. However, there are certain risk factors for the condition. They include:

  • Having a genetic history of the disease
  • It's most common if you are Caucasian
  • Smoking dramatically increases your chances of getting the disease

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

It's essential to get routine eye exams since there are no initial symptoms. As the disease progresses, common symptoms include:

  • Reduced vision in your line of sight
  • Straight lines appearing bent
  • Difficulty adapting to dim lights
  • Blurriness of printed words
  • Faded colors
  • Trouble recognizing faces
  • Needing brighter light to read

Many eye conditions have overlapping symptoms, and you should visit our office to get an exam to determine if your symptoms are caused by macular degeneration. Our optometrists will look in the back of your retina for any signs of yellow deposits called drusen. The deposits are generally a sign of macular degeneration. An Amsler grid test can also determine if your vision has become distorted.

Treating Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration cannot be cured. However, it can be prevented by avoiding smoking, protecting your eyes from UV light, following a healthy diet, and exercising. Medication can help slow the progression of the disease. Other treatments include injections, photodynamics therapy, and laser surgery. We will evaluate your condition and determine the best treatment plan for you. Early diagnosis is key to treating macular degeneration effectively.
