Cataracts
The natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy with age. A cloudy lens is called a cataract. We all develop cataracts if we live long enough. Cataract surgery can improve vision.
Glaucoma
The optic nerve connects the eye to the brain. Degeneration of the optic nerve is glaucoma. High eye pressure is a risk factor. Treatment can prevent irreversible blindness.
Dry Eye
Dry Eye occurs when tears are underproduced or evaporate too quickly. Dry Eye can cause burning, stabbing pain, redness, blurry vision, or tearing. There are effective treatments.
MG Dysfunction
We have ~40 meibomian glands in the upper lid and ~20 in the lower lid. When the oil in these glands solidify, the tear film lacks sufficient oil leading to dry eye. There are treatments.
Diabetic Eye
Uncontrolled diabetes can cause damage to the retina. Eventually, this could result in loss of vision or blindness. All diabetics should undergo a yearly eye exam to detect disease.
ARMD
Age-related macular degeneration can cause damage to the part of the retina the gives us central vision. Early cases may not cause symptoms making exams vitally important.
Floaters
The back of the eye is filled with a jello-like substance called vitreous. As we age, the vitreous degenerates leading to floaters. Some floaters can be treated with a new laser.
Styes & Chalazions
Bumps on the eyelids can develop rapidly and can be painful. Conservative medical treatment can resolve most bumps. Some may go on to require surgical intervention.
Infections & Injury
Infections and injuries are an inconvenient part of having eyes. Serious infections or injuries may require immediate care at an emergency room. Some can be treated in the clinic.
